2B and Dumb Nicknames...

It looks like the next big decision for DB is second base. This is a tough one and I don't know if I have an opinion yet. We've got Hairston, Perez and Hot Rod Todd. According to Paul Sullivan at the Trib, Hairston has the edge. As the article mentions, Hairston leads the pack in BA but that seems like a horrible metric to pick a second basemen. Especially since we all know the bats don't really warm up until after opening day. Feel free to chime in if you've got thoughts on this...

One other thing I recently came across is Dusty's nicknames for a couple of the players. I know he's not a Cub anymore but apparently Wellemeyer is known to Dusty as Welly. Also, I guess he likes to call Angel Guzman Goozie.

DB: "Goozie! Get your ass to Iowa! And quit calling Zambrano Dad, what the hell's wrong with you?"

Anyone else come across any of Dusty's other retarded nicknames?

If we were going for defense, then Cedeno would be at short, Hairston at second, and Perez at third. In the outfield we'd have Pagan, Patterson, and Pie. Behind the plate we'd have Blanco and Bako. And Maddux would have to pitch every inning of every game.

If we are going to put the best team on the field, you're gonna have to go with Walker most days, unless Hairston goes on an offensive tear. And besides, Hairston's defense really doesn't appear to be that much better than Walker's; he ends up face down in the dirt on every play! Perez is far more valuable as our super-utlity/PH guy.

How 'bout Walk? Like "Walker" just isn't cool enough. Come on! He could be a Texas Ranger, and I'm not talking about being on the ball club!

Wow, in a shocking, and somewhat frightening turn of events, Williams has been made the long man in the pen and Marshall has been named the 4th starter. Now I am actually worried about our rotation for April. Williams must have done fairly poorly to be moved like that. We now have a rotation of a legitimate #1 (Z), followed by a swingman (Rusch), followed by a legitimate #3 (Maddux), followed by a rookie who has never pitched above AA. Ouch. Let's hope Marshall really is good, and let's hope Rusch pulls it together. Also, maybe we'll get lucky and Maddux won't get off to his typical slow start. Also, it would help if our offense scores a lot of runs. A LOT of runs.

Ugh. Okay, I was looking through the Cubs' April schedule and I finally found a real reason to be upset about Wood and Prior. Neither is due back until at least late April, probably later. Unfortunately, in April the Cubs play 17 games against division rivals and 6 non-division games. I've really got my fingers crossed for Marshall being lights-out and for Rusch to pitch more like he did in 2004 than he has this spring.

Maybe Rusch will hit well.

Walker's the man at 2nd. Mr. Stubbles can flat hit for real, as in all season long.

Bob Brenly thinks Hairston is our best defensive second baseman. I would've though Neifi. The real question is - does the difference in defense make up for the difference in offense? That's hard to measure.
