Small Notes

I won't be around much today, but I forgot a couple of small things:

1. As Lazlo pointed out, Sergio Mitre was eventually named as being part of the Pierre deal. Eh, so we gave up 3 dudes instead of 2. At the end of the day, I'm happy because we operated as a team should: using resources to fulfill a major need. I can see no way to argue with the fact that Pierre is an upgrade, and even performing at 2005-level numbers will greatly help this team in the lead-off spot. He's ours now, end of story. Let's make him feel welcome.

2. The end of the road has been reached for the Gremlin. It is with a heavy heart that I "announce" (aka "regurgitate old news") that Jose Macias was designated for assignment in the aftermath of the Bob Howry and John Mabry transactions. The extra space was needed, and Macias' number was called. Farewell ye hearty utilityman, may the world not find you too weary. Let's leave with some Macias highlights:

Hmm. With Macias gone that means that we've still got Mabry and Hairston as backup outfielders. One question still remains; who will play right?!! I'm just itching to know. If we bring in a right fielder from elsewhere will Corey be part of a trade (if so, what will we be getting in return for low numbers and high salary)? Or will he be used as a backup outfielder too? Or perhaps he will maintain his major league salary while playing AAA ball. I just don't know. Does anyone have any ideas?

What's the best thing about this offseason so far? The Cardinals will have a very different team next year. One absent of Larry Walker, Reggie Sanders, Matt Morris, Abraham Nunez, John Mabry, Mark Grudzielanek,Cal Eldred and Julian Tavarez. Who's left? Pujols and Carpenter, basically. And that idiot Edmonds, but he'll injure their new outfielders, which will hinder them in the long run. Will Rolen be healthy? Will Eckstein score runs with only Edmonds and Pujols to bat him in? Who will the Cards go to to fill positions after this exodus of veteran players? Time will tell, but it looks like this would be a great year to try and take over as division champs. Watch out for an improved Brewers team and a still-feisty Astros team.

Note: If the Cubs are serious about trading Walker they ought to sign Grudzielanek to play second. But I don't think it will happen. I don't think Grudzie especially wants to be back in Chicago, nor do I think the organization is willing to admit that it would have been a good idea to sign him in 2004.

If I were the Cards, I'd be after Nomar like stink on … you know the drill. Eckstein's natural position is second base, where his weak arm would better serve the team. What an infield that would make, especially now that Nomar is going to have a full season, batting high enough to win the batting title and driving in runs like there's no tomorrow. Wouldn't you love to be Pujoles with Eckstein and Nomar batting in front of you and Roland batting after you?

Jim-
SHHHHH!!! Don't give them any ideas! Nomar is one of those guys who would probably terrorize Cubs pitching.

Even Kansas City has signed 4 free agents in a burst. Granted, one of them is Bako, one of them is Menkewitz (or however you spell his name), but they also got a decent starting pitcher and MARK GRUDZIELANEK. How did MLB allow Kansas City to pick up Grudzie? He's a career .287 batter with good defense! I find this just amazing. Does he have a bad attitude or something? He seems to be a really underated player. In value I would rank him far above Soriano, who can't field his position very well and bats for a pretty low average.
